The first year of a baby’s life moves quietly and quickly all at once.

One moment you are waiting to meet them during pregnancy.
The next, you are holding a sleepy newborn.
Then suddenly they are smiling, sitting, and discovering the world around them.

It is one of the most transformative seasons of family life — and one that deserves to be remembered.

As a newborn and family photographer based in Littlehampton in the Adelaide Hills, I love documenting not just the newborn stage, but the entire first year as it unfolds.

From Maternity to Milestones

Many of the families I photograph begin their journey with a maternity session.

This season captures the anticipation and connection before baby arrives — the quiet moments of waiting and imagining the life that is about to begin.

Soon after, we document the newborn stage, preserving the tiny details that change so quickly.

These early days are soft, emotional, and fleeting.

But the story doesn’t end there.

As babies grow, their personalities begin to shine. That’s where milestone sessions come in.

Baby Milestone Sessions in the First Year

The first year includes several beautiful stages worth documenting.

Newborn (0–3 weeks)

Newborn photography focuses on the quiet tenderness of those first days.

Sleepy stretches, tiny fingers, and the way a baby instinctively settles into their parents’ arms.

These sessions are calm, gentle, and connection-focused.

Three to Four Months

At this stage babies begin to show early expressions and awareness.

They start making eye contact, smiling, and responding to their parents in new ways.

It is a beautiful stage of connection and discovery.

Sitter Session (6–8 months)

The sitter stage is one of the most joyful milestones.

Babies can usually sit independently, which means we see curious expressions, big smiles, and playful personality.

Parents are often amazed at how much their little one has changed since the newborn stage.

First Birthday

By the end of the first year, babies are often standing, crawling, or even walking.

This milestone marks a full year of growth, love, and transformation for the entire family.

Why I Love Being a “First Year Storyteller”

While I am primarily known as a newborn photographer in Adelaide, one of the greatest honours of my work is being invited back as families grow.

Some of the families I photograph return multiple times throughout the year — from maternity to newborn and milestone sessions.

Watching a baby grow through each stage is incredibly special.

The tiny newborn I once photographed becomes the curious sitter who now laughs and explores the world around them.

Documenting this journey creates a meaningful visual story for families to look back on for years to come.
