What Actually Happens at a Newborn Photography Session?

One of the biggest misconceptions about newborn photography is that babies sleep perfectly, parents arrive feeling organised, and everything goes exactly to plan.

One of the biggest misconceptions about newborn photography is that babies sleep perfectly, parents arrive feeling organised, and everything goes exactly to plan.

The truth?

Newborn sessions are usually much slower, gentler, and more relaxed than most parents expect.

As a newborn photographer based in Littlehampton in the Adelaide Hills, one of the things I hear most often from families after their session is:

"That was so much easier than we thought it would be."

If you're expecting and wondering what a newborn session actually looks like, here's a little peek behind the scenes.

Before Your Session

Most families book their newborn session during pregnancy, usually in the second or third trimester.

Rather than booking a fixed date, I reserve space around your due date and then finalise the session once your baby arrives.

This means there is flexibility built into the process from the very beginning.

You don't need to worry about trying to predict exactly when your baby will be born.

Once your little one arrives, we simply find a time that works for everyone.

Arriving With a Newborn

If you're worried that your baby needs to be perfectly settled before the session, please don't be.

Babies cry.

Babies feed.

Babies need cuddles.

That's completely normal.

You do not need to arrive with a sleeping baby, and you certainly don't need to feel like you have everything under control.

The newborn stage is a season of adjustment, and my sessions are designed with that in mind.

A Calm, Baby-Led Approach

One of the most important things to know is that newborn sessions are never rushed.

Your baby leads the session.

If they need feeding, we pause.

If they need a cuddle, we pause.

If they need a nappy change, we pause.

There is no pressure to keep moving or stick to a strict schedule.

Some babies sleep for much of their session, while others prefer to stay awake and take everything in.

Both are beautiful.

Every baby is different, and every session unfolds a little differently too.

What About Parents and Siblings?

Many parents tell me they feel nervous about being in front of the camera.

Often they haven't slept much, they're still recovering from birth, and they don't feel particularly photogenic.

I completely understand.

The good news is that you don't need to know how to pose or what to do.

My role is to gently guide you while keeping everything feeling natural and comfortable.

Rather than focusing on perfect poses, I focus on connection.

The way your baby settles into your chest.

The way you instinctively hold them.

The tiny interactions that already feel like part of your family's story.

If siblings are involved, there is flexibility for them too.

Young children don't always want to sit still, and that's okay.

Some of the most meaningful photographs come from allowing children to simply be themselves.

The Moments You Don't Expect

Some of my favourite images are never the ones families expect.

They're often the quiet moments in between.

A parent looking down at their baby.

A tiny hand wrapped around a finger.

A sleepy stretch after a feed.

The way your newborn curls naturally into your arms.

These are the moments that often become the most treasured years later.

A Complete Storytelling Gallery

Every newborn session includes a carefully curated gallery designed to tell the story of this fleeting season.

I believe these memories belong to your family.

Rather than focusing on sales or choosing between favourite images, I want you to receive a collection that reflects the experience as a whole.

The tiny details.

The connection.

The emotion.

The story.

Looking Back One Day

The newborn stage can feel endless when you're living it.

The sleepless nights.

The constant feeds.

The blur of learning a completely new rhythm.

Yet somehow, it passes in an instant.

My goal is not simply to create beautiful photographs.

It's to preserve how this season felt.

The way your baby fit perfectly into your arms.

The way your family began.

The moments that already feel like home.
